Where to stay in Lisbon
Short, direct answers from a host who lives here. Each guide starts with the answer, then the detail.
Staying in Alfama: what to expect
Is Alfama a good area to stay in Lisbon?
Yes, if you want the oldest, most atmospheric part of Lisbon: steep cobbled lanes, fado houses, river views and the Sé cathedral on your doorstep. Expect hills, stairs instead of streets in places, and limited car access; choose Alfama for character and walkability to Baixa, not for convenience with heavy luggage.

Staying in Baixa, Lisbon's downtown grid
Is Baixa a good place to stay in Lisbon?
Baixa is the flat, grid-planned downtown between the river and Rossio: the easiest area for public transport, luggage and short stays, with most sights walkable. It is busy with visitors by day and quieter at night, and has fewer neighbourhood restaurants than Alfama or Chiado.

Staying in Belém, away from the centre
Should I stay in Belém or central Lisbon?
Stay in Belém if you want river air, museums and quiet evenings, and accept a 20–30 minute tram or train ride to the centre. Stay in Chiado, Baixa or Alfama if nightlife and spontaneity matter more than space and calm.

Staying in Chiado and Bairro Alto
Is Chiado a good base for a first visit to Lisbon?
Chiado is the most convenient base for a first visit: flat enough to walk, central, with the Baixa-Chiado metro, shops, theatres and cafés on every corner, and Bairro Alto nightlife next door. Pick a street away from Bairro Alto if you want quiet after midnight.
